Acne Scars Q & A

What kind of acne scars can be treated?

If you have acne scars that make you feel self-conscious or unhappy, laser treatment may be a great option. Dr. Polavaram can treat depressed acne scars, ice pick acne scars, and most other kinds of acne scars using the Cynosure Icon 1540 non-ablative fractional laser.

Keloids — the raised acne scars — aren't always treatable with a laser, but microneedling may be the ideal way to break up resistant scar tissue. Dr. Polavaram can help you find the right solution for your specific type of acne scars.

How does laser acne scar treatment work?

During acne scar treatment, Dr. Polavaram uses a handheld laser device to send highly concentrated light into your scar tissue. The light breaks your scar tissue apart, and over the coming weeks and months, you'll absorb and eliminate the tissue harmlessly.

Additionally, the Cynosure Icon 1540 non-ablative fractional laser moves into the deeper layers of skin, far below the scar tissue, to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Over time, the collagen and elastin add new support below the skin to fill in scar depressions and ice pick holes.

You'll be comfortable during treatment because the built-in contact cooling system dissipates the laser heat quite effectively. Acne scar treatment sessions usually last around 30 minutes or less.

How many acne scar treatments do I need?

It depends on how severe your acne scars are and how many scars you have. Most patients need a series of at least four treatments, with sessions happening once a month. You and Dr. Polavaram evaluate progress as you go and adjust the treatment plan, if needed, so you can get optimal results.

What can I expect after acne scar treatment?

You may have some mild redness and slight swelling after each laser acne scar treatment, but this goes away within a few days. There's no downtime needed after acne scar treatment, so you can go back to your routine right away if you'd like.

If your acne scars make you feel embarrassed or unhappy, seize the chance to treat them with an effective noninvasive solution. Book your appointment at Cary Laser Aesthetics through the online scheduler or by phone now.
